Violett Beane is not only a successful and talented actress but a young lady with a whole lot of conviction and heart. Whether she is protecting the rights of animals via her vegan practices and campaigns for Peta, or addressing the nation with outspoken words on gun reform and mental health institutions, Violett’s number one on the agenda is to be a good person, treat others with kindness and help make choice decisions that benefit a brighter world for everyone. It is no wonder we fell instantly for this bright and shining star, and her fluffy new pup companion Kora (who tagged along) was an added bonus. This article is chock full of wisdom from a prodigy we are certainly watching.

Sienna Vratimos

When photographer Wendy Horton brought Sienna Vratimos to my attention, I was blown away by the presence, the strength and the love of this little girl. At five years old, Sienna’s non-verbal autism has challenged her life in many ways, yet has never defined her. Through the support of her loving mom Karyn, the Vratimos’ family and her therapists created a dedicated blog to share her story, to sharpen her toolset, and to help others through insight and resources. Karyn’s photo booth has given Sienna a celebratory platform to connect and communicate with others, while giving its readership the opportunity to witness the incredible internal light radiating from one deeply determined and passionate child. For Karyn and her daughter Sienna, this is a journey of love, two best friends, and a community learning to see life a little differently and taking a cue from a new Superhero on how to live life to the fullest.

Jovina & Joys Annika G. David

Sisters & Pre-Med StudentsMalibu, CAStory & Photos by Lauri Levenfeld

When we received the submission of Jovina David for TPFG Super Girl Contest last December, we were astounded. Not only were her academic achievements unheard of (attending university at 13), but it was her big-picture concepts, her desire to change the world, and her empathy and compassion for others. And then her sister came along, Joys Annika G. David, who just like her big sis was enrolled in college (at 11 years old) and who looked at the world as her ever-evolving canvas, one which she could shape her passions and ambitions into goals not many would dream of. What we find striking about the two is their ability to dream big, try new things and go outside of their comfort zone. To choose to live life differently than what is paved before them…and to choose to do this side by side together as sisters and best friends.

Grace Wethor

As one of our Super Girl nominees, Grace Wethor’s story about surviving a brain tumor hit us hard at The Project for Girls. At 15, no kid should go through the worry, stress and pain that Grace has. But Grace truly is a supergirl in every way and while the diagnosis hasn’t been pretty (the tumor is inoperable),  she has overcome with bravery, joy, love, and compassion. Wethor and her mom have not lost hope in any way, they live life presently and look  to find alternative, natural treatments. This is truly Grace’s greatest gift, her ability to channel courage and fight this disease while upholding a positive message and course of action… staying true to herself and leading life daily by the things she loves to do. We can all learn a lot from this young lady. Right now, we all have the chance to live our most authentic lives.

Delaney Ruston

Filmmaker & PhysicianStony Brook, NYStory & Photos by Lauri Levenfeld

Thinking about our teens- their cell phones and the time they spend on their screens makes most parents crazy, sick with worry, and most definitely, unsure about how to navigate it all. While technology is a beautiful tool to give our children access and means to learning, it is also the culprit of time spent away from real social interaction, family-time and school work. When physician Delaney Ruston found her two teenage children growing more committed and preoccupied by their screens, Ruston’s anxiety grew. And her questions as to how to rectify the situation gave her cause to turn a film camera on her own family to document their struggles, while researching to find answers in other people’s experiences. Her anxiety turned to hope as her discussions with adults and children signified that we all are new to this and scrambling to find the right answers and path, but through dialog and community we will pave a way. With this Screenagers was born, another documentary where Ruston puts her personal life in the camera’s eye to explore a larger societal issue. This is a story about a woman, a mom, and a caretaker working her best to shed light and change circumstances for those individuals and issues under addressed by society.

Rachel Clyde & Sage Mace

Activists & BestiesMarin, CAPhotos by Lauri LevenfeldStory by Lauri Levenfeld

Having a best friend to lift you up when you need lifting and to help you soar when you are dreaming is truly one of our most precious gifts as we grow up. For Rachel Clyde & Sage Mace, a friendship bloomed from a very early age centered around how to serve the world, lots of giggles, and the act of giving back. Both were horrified when they learned of the 32 million modern-day slaves still existing in the world.

They used their determination, persistence, and drive to help formulate ways to strike back on this issue and channel fundraising efforts to stop slavery via their organization Free-Beauty.org. There is a reason people call them Rage (Rachel & Sage)- alone each is special, together they are magnificent. Their story shows how with drive and focus, anyone can see their efforts affect change and impact a problem you care about.

Belinda Gosbee

ActressLos Angeles, CAStory and Photos by Lauri LevenfeldStyling by Katja O’Brien

Gotta love those Aussies! Always up for a good time. And Belinda Gosbee, gives her Aussie mates a great name. I was lucky to have an up for anything partner-in-crime for our dramatic blizzard-blowing Sundance Film Festival fashion shoot. This year marked a very important year for the independents, as the festival not only combined the artistry and great minds of the industry, but took on a more universal platform and presence with a weekend share of the Presidential Inauguration and the Women’s March on Main Street for opening weekend. While heads swam in combination of the two, people like Gosbee will permanently be etched in mind as they are the storytellers, the people who put us in touch with places we’ve never been and people we do not know-giving us the opportunity to learn, to understand, and be more compassionate towards others. And it is this opportunity that Gosbee believes awakens people to a new sense of discovery and the ability to connect to a larger universal picture. A picture we all need to keep close to our hearts these days.
