Alexa Ponciano

This is a second go for Alexa Ponciano via TPFG, as last year she wrote a beautiful and honest depiction of her life with her dual diagnosis of a brain tumor and Celiac disease at the early age of 8 years old. And how her survival of both (and currently living with Celiac) has changed the course of her life creating a newfound respect and appreciation for each and every day she has on this earth. Alexa is all about living life to the fullest, having fun, and staying positive.   And it is this light within Alexa that immediately drew me to her. She was willing to try anything. She was brave and vocal about her interests and her passions, making sure opportunities and experiences never past her by without a try. We talk to Alexa about her latest venture, WearsAlexa, a blog celebrating her love of fashion and her interest in showing girls ways to strut their personal style. And hey, its oh-so fun to be your own boss and create your own business!

1. What’s the latest for Alexa? Who are you currently and what are your interests?

I’ve been super busy with school! I have been studying for my high school entrance exam and took the test about a week ago. I feel good about it.  But I won’t find out for another month, at least, to see if  I got into my first choice of  school. I’ve had the opportunity to work as a model with some amazing photographers both in the Northern CA and Southern CA. And recently, I  able to participate in the anti-bullying runway show hosted by  Free 2 Luv and Kid Fashion Magazine. And my most exciting new venture is my fashion blog WearsAlexa.com! I’m playing around with photography and editing and using the photos on my blog. I’ve also recently started dance, I am taking hip hop and jazz. It’s so much fun and I would love to take more classes in the near future.

2. What made you start a blog?

I love fashion, and I have always loved writing. I wanted to combine the two in some way. So…

creating a blog was a perfect idea. I also wanted to share my fashion style and give inspiration beyond Instagram. Personally I’ve also been searching for good teen inspirations and I haven’t been able to find a whole lot, so I thought I would share my ideas with others who might feel the same way.

3. Were there challenges in getting started?

For sure! A big part was the writing, what do I write about? What do I wear? What is trending?  Will others like my fashion? I thought I’ll go for it and incorporate my style with current trends.

4. How has your career in modeling prepared you for this venture?

re? I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of stylists who have shown me how to play with color, be creative, and to have fun with my style. I’m using what I have learned from them to help curate what I wear and write in my blog.

5. In regards to the fashion, what do you want to communicate to your audience?

For me style is a big part of who I am, it makes me feel confident. It also makes me feel like a boss and I can change the world. What you wear expresses you! Be proud of your personal style and rock it! Show the world who you are! And fashion doesn’t have to cost a fortune.  Wearing the right outfit can make you feel amazing!

6. Do you think your peers dress for their age?

I think some do. We are young and it’s fun playing with different styles and wearing fun colors and creative outfits. But the problem is when teens dress too old or too revealing. This is the exact reason I wanted to start my blog.  To show that as teens we can dress super cute and trendy but we don’t need to show too much skin or dress older than we are.

7. How has fashion influenced your life?

Fashion makes me feel confident. It makes me feel good about myself. Fashion guides me with inspiration for my blog.  I can open a magazine and say this is me.  I want to wear this and I want to share this idea with my friends and followers.

8. Do you have a mentor to help you pave your way? To help you problem solve?

I first want to say my mom is my mentor and best friend. I know she will never guide me down the wrong path. She has the best intentions for me and she is always honest with my ideas. I also get so much inspiration from my best friend at school. She always inspires me. I also love to follow Olivia Jade, even though I don’t know her personally, I do love watching her YouTube channel. And I love getting guidance and inspiration from her when it comes to what to wear, makeup, and hair styles. My hope is to one-day meet her in person.

9. Do you see this as a business or just a platform for your passion?

I feel like both. Fashion is first and foremost my passion, but I do want to turn this into a career. I’d love to work with the public as a stylist and a model. Maybe working with celebrities. Or even one day getting hired as a personal shopper.  Now that would be fun! Shop all day on someone else’s dime. But this blog is also my platform to express me and help those that might struggle with what to wear.  To hopefully, help them to feel more confident about themselves and what they wear.

10. If you had one piece advice to share with your fellow teens, what would it be?

Live life to the fullest! Rock your style and be proud of who you are!
